The Delta Regional Authority (DRA) recently awarded approximately $7 million toward 25 workforce development projects supporting economic development and prosperity throughout the lower Mississippi River Delta and Alabama Black Belt regions. Together, the grants impact 62 participating Work Ready Communities. WRC locations funded include 1 from Alabama, 8 from Arkansas, 4 from Louisiana, 12 from Mississippi, 7 from Missouri, and 5 from Tennessee.
With a panel of Work Ready Community champions, episode 54 explores innovative strategies and real-world examples of how partnerships between industries, educational institutions, and government agencies are reshaping workforce development. Work for Warriors, a program from the Mississippi National Guard, celebrated the success of a recent pilot with the WorkKeys NCRC. All 154 soldiers statewide earned the National Career Readiness Certificate from ACT. More than half of those newly certified guard members are eager to connect with local employers.
The Mississippi National Guard’s Battle Hand Off Ceremony is July 19th through 21st at the Camp Shelby Joint Force Training Center in Hattiesburg. Employers slated to attend include AWS, Milwaukee Tool, NUCOR Steel, and Continental Tire. Work for Warriors encourages all local employers with current openings to attend.
The population of the Mississippi Delta continues to decline, but the Delta Strong project of the Delta Council strives to make sure workers are trained and ready when needed by industry by providing training through the ACT Work Ready Communities program.
More and more industries and college technical training programs require employees to take the national WorkKeys test, which assesses a person’s readiness for employment in different types of jobs. In response to this demand, more and more communities are moving to become “work ready” communities
