A new resource for students, parents, and educators to discover career-readiness programs as well as to engage local employers is now available to help youth connect to rewarding careers in the GLOW region. The Genesee County Economic Development Center has unveiled the Genesee County Career Roadmap. This GIS tool tracks careers across Western NY.

The Center for Workforce Development hosted the ACT Work Ready Communities Educator Summit on April 24 in the Professional Development Center at BOCES 2. The event brought together school counselors and administrators from all over the region and representatives from area businesses to find out more.

Nine students from Pavilion High School completed the ACT® WorkKeys® National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC), connecting them to future careers available in Genesee County and across many industries. Timothy Lonnen, a senior at Pavilion, said the NCRC assessment results showed the career readiness that he and his classmates have put into practice through summer jobs and internships.

“It’s going to be nice for people to put on paper what you know in your head,” said Lonnen, a senior planning whose long-term plan is to start a construction company. “You can have a (standardized testing) score for college, but this will give you a score for real jobs coming out of high school.”

Apple Tree Acres of Bergen, NY (in the WRC at Genesee County) supports the growth of businesses in wastewater equipment and agricultural machinery manufacturing, logistics, technology and food production. Representatives from Liberty Pumps, Craft Cannery and Oxbo share how Genesee County, the Genesee County Economic Development Center, and the Town and Village of Bergen have supported their growth. All three employers are WRC WorkKeys Supporters.

Genesee County’s ACT Work Ready Communities campaign has quickly hit its first milestone with support from various employers. Business signups surpassed 92, meeting the program’s goal. Now, local supporters are working with schools, workforce institutions, and other stakeholders to recruit candidates and companies for the next phase.
